Adobe Image Ready software provides tools to slice your large image into medium size images.  After you have sliced your image; save it in the html page.  If the guides are not visible, select View-Show Guides.

Using the guides as a reference; start slicing your layout by selecting the Slice Tool (Y) from the Adobe Image Ready Tool Palette.  Snaps simplify placement of crops, slices, drawing tools, paths, objects and selection edges.  In order to place something, you will align it with the guides, slices and grids.  To use the Snap function, you select the View Menu-Snap to- and a submenu.  Using the slice tool, you make a selection over the guideline and slice it.  It is easiest to start with slicing the buttons, then the logo, then the images.  Make sure that your sliced images do not overlap other images to avoid future problems on the html page.  Do not make your sliced images too small or too large.  The goal is fast downloading of the layout, so you need optimal slices, but don’t get carried away and fragment it.

After you slice the layout, click on the Optimized Icon which will transform the layout to the optimized mode.  When in this mode, you can check the layout to view its display and file size.  To correct visual problems as a result of the slicing, such as jagged edges or unclear effects, click on Window-Show Optimize.  This process allows you to finetune the display quality and file size to optimize the use of the layout.  Images can be optimized in GIF, JPEG, PNG-8 or PNG-24.

Select the best file format for optimized images based on the color, tone and graphic characteristics of an original image.  This allows you to specify image quality, background transparency, matting, color display and the method of downloading.  The JPEG or GIF format is ideal for photographs. If an illustration has a flat color, sharp edges or a lot of detail, it should be compressed as a GIF file for optimal effects.
